In order to maintain the safety and law and order in the state, Alexandria Virginia’s legislative bodies have formed multiple laws for unlawful vehicle modification and theft crimes. Every state of The United States has multiple laws and penalties with respect to altering the appearance of the car. The laws can range from dark tinting of the car’s window to modifying the car’s exhaust system.

Exhaust system
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1049 (Exhaust system):
“No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.”
Nitrous Oxide
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1088.4:
“It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth if such vehicle is equipped with any device that supplies the vehicle’s engine with nitrous oxide, unless the device has been disabled such that the supply of nitrous oxide is disconnected and not readily accessible to the source of delivery.”
Suspension
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1063. (Alteration of suspension system; bumper height limits; raising body above frame rail).
“No person shall drive on a public highway any motor vehicle registered as a passenger motor vehicle if it has been modified by alteration of its altitude from the ground to the extent that its bumpers, measured to any point on the lower edge of the main horizontal bumper bar, exclusive of any bumper guards, are not within the range of fourteen inches to twenty-two inches above the ground. Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this section, the range of bumper heights for motor vehicles bearing street rod license plates issued pursuant to § 46.2-747 shall be nine to twenty-two inches”
Tinting films on window
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1052:
“Except as otherwise provided in this article or permitted by federal law, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate any motor vehicle on a highway with any sign, poster, colored or tinted film, sun-shading material, or other colored material on the windshield, front or rear side windows, or rear windows of such motor vehicle. This provision, however, shall not apply to any certificate or other paper required by law or permitted by the Superintendent to be placed on a motor vehicle’s windshield or window.”
Radar Detector
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1079 (Radar detectors; demerit points not to be awarded)
“It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth when such vehicle is equipped with any device or mechanism, passive or active, to detect or purposefully interfere with or diminish the measurement capabilities of any radar, laser, or other device or mechanism employed by law-enforcement personnel to measure the speed of motor vehicles on the highways of the Commonwealth for law-enforcement purposes. It shall be unlawful to use any such device or mechanism on any such motor vehicle on the highways. It shall be unlawful to sell any such device or mechanism in the Commonwealth.”
Car TV’s
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1077:
“No motor vehicle registered in the Commonwealth of Virginia shall be equipped with, nor shall there be used therein, a television receiver forward of the driver’s seat or the screen of which would otherwise be visible to the driver while driving the vehicle. The operator of a motor vehicle which is not required to be registered in Virginia shall not operate a television receiver which violates the provisions of this section while driving in the Commonwealth.”
Seatbelts
As per the Virginia code of 2006 section 46.2-1093:
“Any safety lap belt or shoulder harness or any combination of a lap belt and shoulder harness installed in a vehicle shall be designed and installed in such manner as to prevent or materially reduce movement of any person using the same in the event of collision or upset of the vehicle.”
